Studio Flat
Conversion of the former storeroom basement of a countryside house near the northern Sicilian coast, built in the late seventies (designed by the architect Fabio Lombardo), into an independent studio flat.
The core of the spatial organisation is an “island” which allows to create a living-dining area and a night area without denying the space continuity; the “island” is made by means of an independent freestanding partition wall sixty centimetre lower than the ceiling, with its side toward the living area arranged as kitchenette, and its opposite side toward the night area arranged as a cupboard.
The spatial experience is enriched by the “enfilade” of the four splayed windows on the northern wall. These openings, and the French window to the garden on the West elevation, provide ever changing effects of light and shadow throughout the day.
The cupboards and the shelves are in birch plywood; the floor is in polished EMACO concrete with local sea gravel; the bathroom floor and wall cladding are in Carrara marble slabs.
