Parents' Apartment

The apartment is in an originally social housing block built in the fifties in a residential area in Palermo. The renovation design transformed the former plan, quite stiff and blocked, in a more fluid space, with a balance between opening and enclosure. This was achieved by means of punctual interventions: two wide aligned openings in the entrance partition walls allow continuity between the living-dining and the office space; the original standard door between the entrance and the corridor was replaced by a wide double panel door; a glazed veranda was created in the main balcony, and this new interior space was connected to the kitchen - dining area through a new splayed opening in the in-between bearing wall. The kitchen itself was arranged in another glazed veranda, freeing space for the adjacent dining area.

The doors are in birch veneer, with mullions in iron bars; the bedroom and kitchen cupboards are in birch veneer as well. The bathroom floor and wall cladding are in Carrara marble slabs; the kitchen, dining area and corridor floors are in Asiago stone slabs. The new large window frames in the verandas are in natural finished solid wood.
